My husband and I just got back from a weekend trip to Savannah, GA to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. It was a fabulous weekend and we loved us some southern hospitality.
On our last night we went to the Olde Pink House for dinner. The setting itself, which is a gorgeous 18th century mansion, was amazing all by itself, but pair that with a fantastic dinner and great service and it made for a perfect anniversary dinner. Also, the Pats won, which topped off a the great night!
So, I will get to the point of this post. It is not to write a review of a fabulous restaurant (although, I highly recommend it if you are ever in the area), but to share with you this delicious “BLT” salad, Fried Green Tomatoes & Sweet Bacon w/Black Pepper Thyme Buttermilk Dressing. It was featured on “The Best Thing I Ever Ate…” on the Foodnetwork.
The fried green tomatoes added the perfect southern touch and the bacon was exceptional. Our waitress called it a “sweet applewood smoked bacon.” And, after some internet searching, I was able to find a recipe. I’m not sure if it is legit yet as I have not had a chance to try it, but I will definitely be giving it a shot! I hope it is as good as the real thing 🙂
- 2 fried green tomatoes – Soak tomatoes in buttermilk, coat in flour mixture (1/2 flour, 1/2 cornmeal, salt and pepper) and fry to golden brown.
- 2 pieces of applewood smoked bacon – cook with brown sugar, fold into a circle
- Mixed field greens
Buttermilk thyme dressing (2 oz.)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 4 ounces sour cream
- 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1 clove chopped garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon honey
- salt to taste
Mix greens in dressing.
Stack salad by layering greens with tomato and bacon.
Garnish last tomato with a small amount of dressing, chopped red pepper and green onion.
Happy anniversary Matt…2 years and counting!
